How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
The fastest way to delete exact duplicates on iPhone is the built-in Duplicates album (Photos → Albums → Utilities → Duplicates, on iOS 16 and later). For the near-duplicates and burst shots it misses, a swipe cleaner like ZeroRoll groups them on your device so you keep the best frame and let the rest go — with nothing uploaded.
Step 1 — Use the built-in Duplicates album (free, exact copies)
iOS finds true duplicates for you, no app required:
- Open Photos and tap the Albums tab.
- Scroll to the bottom, to Utilities → Duplicates.
- Tap Merge on a set. iPhone keeps the highest-quality version (and the most useful metadata) and moves the others to Recently Deleted.
If you don’t see a Duplicates album, you’re either on an older iOS or the system is still scanning — give it a day after a big import.
Step 2 — Know what the album misses
The Duplicates album only catches exact and near-exact copies. It leaves behind the clutter that actually fills a camera roll:
- Burst frames — ten nearly-identical shots of the same moment.
- Retakes — the three attempts before the photo you kept.
- Edited copies — the original plus its cropped or filtered version.
- Blurry shots and screenshots — not duplicates, but rarely worth keeping.
Step 3 — Clear near-duplicates with a swipe
This is where a dedicated cleaner helps. ZeroRoll computes a perceptual hash for each photo on your device and clusters the look-alikes into Smart Stacks — burst frames, retakes, slight crops. You keep the best frame and drop the rest in a single swipe, working month by month. It also flags blurry photos and separates screenshots, so you can clear whole categories fast. Nothing is uploaded, there’s no account, and it’s not AI guessing for you — you decide every keep-or-let-go.
Step 4 — Reclaim the storage (and stay safe)
Deleting doesn’t free space instantly: iPhone holds removed photos in Recently Deleted for 30 days. To get the gigabytes back now, open that album and delete them for good. That 30-day window is also your safety net — and ZeroRoll adds its own 30-day undo on top, so a fast session never costs you a photo you actually wanted.
The short version

|---|---|
| Exact duplicates | Built-in Duplicates album (free) |
| Burst frames, retakes, edited copies | ZeroRoll Smart Stacks (on-device) |
| Blurry photos & screenshots | ZeroRoll (flagged automatically) |
| Undo a mistake | Recently Deleted (30 days) + ZeroRoll’s 30-day undo |
