How to clean up your camera roll
A ten-year camera roll feels impossible because you keep trying to do it all at once. The trick is to make it small and reversible: see what’s actually taking space, sort one month at a time, and clear the obvious clutter — duplicates, bursts, blurry shots, screenshots — before you touch the photos you care about. Here’s the calm version, on iPhone and Android.
1. See what’s really filling it up
Before deleting anything, confirm photos are the problem:
- iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Android: Settings → Storage (or Files by Google → Clean).
If “Photos” is at the top of the list — and for most people it is — you’re in the right place.
2. Sort one month at a time
The single biggest mistake is opening your whole library and scrolling. Don’t. Work the newest month first, finish it, then move back in time. A finished month is a small win you can feel; an endless scroll is just dread. (This is exactly how ZeroRoll lays your library out — by month, newest first.)
3. Clear duplicates, bursts, blurry shots and screenshots
Most of a camera roll isn’t precious memories — it’s ten shots of the same moment, a few blurry misfires, and a pile of old screenshots. Handle those in bulk and you’ve reclaimed most of your storage without agonizing over a single photo.
- Exact duplicates: iPhone’s built-in Duplicates album handles these — here’s the full guide.
- Near-duplicates & bursts: a swipe cleaner like ZeroRoll groups them into Smart Stacks on-device — keep the best, drop the rest in one move.
- Blurry & screenshots: ZeroRoll flags and separates these so you can clear the whole category at once.
4. Confirm, then reclaim the space
Batch your deletions and confirm them. One thing people miss: deleting doesn’t free space instantly — both iPhone and Android keep removed photos in a Recently Deleted area for ~30 days. That’s your safety net. To get the gigabytes back immediately, empty it. (ZeroRoll keeps its own 30-day undo too, so you’re double-covered.)
5. Keep it at zero
The reason camera rolls balloon is that we never sort them. Spend five minutes on the newest month every few weeks and the backlog never returns. That’s the whole idea behind ZeroRoll — Inbox Zero for your camera roll, the newest month always free.
